JD Vance accuses part of Ukrainian intelligence services of trying to influence elections in US and Hungary
United States Vice President JD Vance has said that there are people within Ukraine's intelligence services who had allegedly tried to influence both American and Hungarian elections.
Source: European Pravda citing Vance's remarks at a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest
Details: Vance said the US recognised that there are elements within the Ukrainian intelligence services that try to influence the course of elections in the US and Hungary.
Quote: "This is just what they do. This is part and cost of doing the business with some elements of their system. I try to remind myself that Ukraine, like the United States, is a very complicated place. There are good people and there are bad people. There are people who try to interfere in other [countries'] elections, and there are people who actually just say: 'You know what, we believe in sovereignty for everybody, and that's what we support'."
More details: Vance added that there had been people in the Ukrainian system who were "campaigning with the Democrats literally in the weeks before the presidential election, where Donald Trump won very comfortably in November 2024".
Quote: "So I am aware of that stuff, but you know, I don't think Viktor [Orbán] lets that stuff get to him. I don't let that stuff get to me... And whatever certain elements within the Ukrainian system think about me or think about anybody else, I really believe it's in the best interests of Ukraine, the best interests of Europe and Hungary, the best interests of the United States for this war to come to as rapid of a close as possible."
Background:
- Vance also said he travelled to Budapest because "interference from Brussels" in Hungary's elections was outrageous.
- He also gave a positive assessment of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's position on the Russo-Ukrainian war.
- It was reported earlier that Vance's trip to Budapest was intended to support Orbán's Fidesz party in the parliamentary elections. It was reported that the US vice-president would speak at Orbán's election rally.
