US lawmakers will make another effort next week to pass a resolution designed to stop the war with Iran and require President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval for any further military action.

Details: The Democrats have already tried three times this year to force a vote, but without success.

Quote: "Congress must reassert its authority, especially at this dangerous moment. No president, Democrat or Republican, should take this country to war alone, not now, not ever."

More details: Schumer said he "publicly and privately told the White House just what we've said here" during the tense hours between the president's threat that "a whole civilisation will die tonight" and the announcement of a ceasefire.

But he did not speak with Trump directly and was told the president was "unavailable".

Schumer also criticised the last-minute truce as "fragile" and "not a plan".

Quote: "The only viable solution is a lasting diplomatic one. A two-week ceasefire, especially one as fragile as this, is not a strategy. It's not a diplomatic solution. It's not a plan."

More details: Schumer said he does not believe the administration is giving Congress a "satisfactory answer" about its end goal.

Quote: "From day one, this war has never had a satisfactory answer to what is the goal? What do we want to achieve? What is the timetable? How much will it cost in both lives and treasure? He has never had an answer. In fact, his answer varies from day to day to day."

More details: Schumer also described Trump's actions as "worse than erratic, it's dangerous".

Background: Earlier, Schumer condemned Trump's threat to make "a whole civilisation die" and called him "an extremely sick person".
