"With all due respect, the vice president is not taking part in the negotiations between the US and Ukraine and Russia. And I think that if he and other officials were involved in these negotiations, they would probably... have a deeper understanding of what a 'patch of land' is, what... Ukrainian territory, independent Ukrainian territory, is," Zelenskyy said, commenting on Vance's remarks.

He stressed that the occupation of territory is one of Russia's goals, and it always has been in one form or another.

Commenting on the negotiations to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, Vance questioned the value of arguing over "a few square kilometres", apparently implying that Kyiv should make territorial concessions.

Prior to this, Vance had once again praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his position on Ukraine.
