Details: Police officers helped the elderly man to reach a car service so that he could continue on his journey.
According to Kyiv police, the man had been living in Donbas with his wife. When the hostilities intensified, they moved to Chernihiv Oblast in Ukraine's north. But then the man's wife was killed in a Russian attack.
"The 70-year-old man packed his whole life into an old VAZ and set off towards a safer place," police officers said. "He took all the most valuable things he could carry: belongings, household appliances, 18 chickens and a dog. But the car couldn't cope with the long journey and eventually broke down."
The man was confused and distressed because the car would no longer move. A passerby noticed him on the streets of the capital and called the police for help.
Patrol officers spoke with the man and offered him support. Together, they towed the car to a repair shop so that he could have it fixed.
"Imagine for a moment that the front line is rapidly approaching your home – first in Donetsk Oblast, and then in Chernihiv Oblast … The place where you may have grown up, where your children grew up. A place where every piece of land reminds you of family, warm evenings, and comfort. There are far too many people like this today," the police said. "The hero of our story doesn't need to imagine it."
