Hungary's incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar has indicated that he will not block the EU's €90bn loan for Ukraine, as the decision was already taken, but confirmed that Hungary will not take part in it.

Details: Magyar was answering a question about the loan for Ukraine blocked by Hungary's current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Quote: "I am not sure what exactly we are even talking about here. Because in December, at the European Council meeting, Orbán voted for Hungary not to take part in this loan, and the European Council voted in favour of it. Hungary, Czechia and Slovakia are not taking part in the €90 billion loan, so it does not concern our country. That is how it was approved."

More details: Magyar promised to raise the issue in talks with European leaders.

Quote: "But personally I agree that Hungary should not take part in this mechanism. Hungary is in a very difficult financial situation, and our task is to bring back the EU funds that are owed to us. We cannot take on more loans. But the decision has already been taken by the European Council in December, so I do not know why this issue should be raised again."

More details: Magyar referred to the fact that Orbán had changed his position too often.

Quote: "We will try to be consistent and honest in our communication and will not change our position every six months."

Background:

  • Following the defeat of Viktor Orbán in the elections on 12 April, the European Union is hoping that both its €90 billion loan for Ukraine and the 20th Russia sanctions package can be unblocked as quickly as possible.
  • The German government has expressed hope that the outcome of Hungary's parliamentary elections, which were won by Péter Magyar's opposition Tisza party, will help quickly unblock the EU loan for Ukraine.
  • After winning the parliamentary elections, Magyar declared that Hungary will once again be a reliable partner in the EU and NATO.
