Ukraine's Defence Ministry has announced the introduction of drone-assault units that will combine aerial and ground drones with infantry in a single system.

Details: The ministry said this approach had already shown results in the south, where a large area of territory has been liberated since February thanks specifically to the use of these new units.

Background:

  • On 2 March, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that in February 2026 the defence forces regained control of more Ukrainian territory than Russian forces captured, while Russian losses averaged 1,031 personnel per day.
  • On 2 March, Ukraine's Air Assault Forces reported the liberation of nine settlements on the Oleksandrivka front and the destruction of a significant amount of Russian equipment.
  • On 8 March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the defence forces have regained control over 400-435 sq km of territory in Ukraine's south.
