Several people have been killed and others have been injured as a shooter has opened fire on people in the city of Kyiv. Police are carrying out a special operation to detain the suspect.

Early reports say one person was killed and a number of people have been injured. Information on the number of casualties is being gathered. Police units and Special Rapid Response Corps forces have been dispatched to the scene."

Details: Reports on social media said the incident took place in the Demiivka district of Kyiv. Local residents said an unidentified man aged about 60 opened fire on people. He then allegedly barricaded himself inside a Velmart supermarket and took several people hostage.

Ukrainska Pravda sources in law enforcement agencies said the shooter has entered a shop. Police cordoned off the area and a special operation is ongoing. The exact number of casualties is still being determined.

Update: Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a child was among those injured in the street in the Holosiivskyi district of the city. Medics are taking the child to hospital. Injured adults are being examined and treated at the scene. Klitschko said several people have been killed and injured as a result of the shooting.

Quote from Klitschko: "The special operation to detain the man who opened fire and is currently inside the supermarket is ongoing. Early reports say shots have also been heard inside the supermarket."

At about 18:00, Klitschko said that, according to medics, two people have been killed in the Holosiivskyi district. Five people injured in the street shooting were taken to hospitals in the capital.

Those injured include a child and a security guard from the supermarket the shooter has stormed into and where he remains barricaded. The operation to detain him is ongoing.
