Details: Trump said the suspect taken into custody was "a whackjob".
"My impression is that he was a lone wolf, a whackjob. These are crazy people, and they have to be dealt with," he noted.
Trump also stated that the event will be postponed to a later date, adding that the incident had been traumatic for First Lady Melania Trump.
He also said he had initially not wanted to leave the scene despite requests from the US Secret Service.
Quote: "I fought like hell to stay, but it was protocol. They said, 'Please, sir', because there was a lot of action going on and they didn't know, could there be, probably a lone shooter."
Details: When asked by a reporter whether he believed he had been the target of the attack, Trump replied: "I guess… These people are crazy; you never know."
He explained that attackers often choose the most influential people for assassination attempts.
Quote: "I've studied assassinations and I must tell you, [they always go for] the most impactful people, the people that do the most, you take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln... They don't go after the ones who don't do much because they like it that way… We have done a lot."
Background: Earlier, Trump was swiftly escorted away from the White House Correspondents' Dinner after gunshots were heard in the building.
