Background:
- On the evening of 25 April in Washington, gunshots were heard during the White House Correspondents' Dinner at a hotel where Trump and Melania Trump were present; they were urgently evacuated.
- Law enforcement officials said the attacker was identified as 31-year-old teacher Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, California. He was detained. The attacker's motives were unknown.
- White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the targets of the shooting were Trump and members of his administration.
- Trump also believes the shooting would not have happened if a "large, safe, and secure ballroom" had been built on the White House's grounds.
