Ukrainians have become less confident in security guarantees from Europe and the United States in the event of another Russian attack.

Source: a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), as reported by European Pravda

Details: The survey shows that at the beginning of the year, 59% of Ukrainians expected that Europe would provide the necessary support to repel a renewed attack, whereas now the figure is 52%.

Meanwhile, the share of those who do not believe Europe would provide the necessary support has increased from 31% to 41%.

However, those who believe in security guarantees from Europe still outnumber those who do not.

In the case of security assurances from the US, the changes are more significant. While in January there was parity between those who believed and those who did not, as of April, a majority of Ukrainians no longer believe that the US would provide the necessary support.

The share of those who do not believe this has increased from 40% to 57%, while the share of those who trust US security guarantees has fallen from 39% to 27%.

The sociologists also noted that, compared with Europe, twice as many respondents were undecided in the case of the assurances from the US and could not answer the question – 16% versus 7%.

Background:

  • On 25 March, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the US was offering Kyiv security guarantees only in exchange for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the unoccupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later described the Ukrainian president's statement as untrue.
  • Zelenskyy, in turn, insisted that during the negotiation process, the US had signalled its willingness to provide security guarantees only after the Armed Forces of Ukraine withdrew from Donbas.
