Details: Bohlin said the incident occurred in Swedish territorial waters at around 14:00 on 3 May.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Coast Guard, Police and National Task Force of Sweden, with support from aviation units.

The authorities said the Jin Hui is suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet and of sailing under a false flag.

The Coast Guard said the vessel is subject to sanctions imposed by the EU, the UK and Ukraine.

The intervention was prompted by suspicions of breaches of maritime law and the vessel's technical unseaworthiness. It has now been towed to a berth for further investigation.

Law enforcement officials said investigators and Coast Guard officers are working on board, but no one has been detained so far. The investigation is ongoing.

Background:

  • On 6 March, Sweden stopped and detained the Caffa vessel in the Baltic Sea on suspicion of using a false flag and breaching maritime law and safety requirements. The vessel's Russian captain was eventually remanded in custody.
  • On 29 April, Swedish police arrested the Caffa vessel.
