Details: Zelenskyy noted that as of 4 May, Ukraine had received "no official appeal" regarding the modalities of a cessation of hostilities that are being discussed in Russian social media.
The president stressed that human life is incomparably more valuable than the celebration of any anniversary.
Quote: "In this regard, we are announcing a ceasefire regime starting at 00:00 on the night of 5-6 May. In the time left until that moment, it is realistic to ensure that silence takes effect. We will act reciprocally starting from that moment."
Details: Zelenskyy also called on the Russian leadership to take real steps towards ending the war they started. He added that, by Russia's own statements, the holding of the parade in Moscow on Victory Day currently depends on "Ukraine's goodwill". [Victory Day is a Russian holiday commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, celebrated on 9 May – ed.]
Background:
- On 29 April, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, said that Vladimir Putin had had a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which he expressed his readiness to declare a "ceasefire" on 9 May.
- Zelenskyy said it was "dishonest" of Russia to kill Ukrainians and then ask for a one-day ceasefire.
- On 4 May, Russia's Ministry of Defence unilaterally declared a "truce" for 8 and 9 May and warned that if the Victory Day parade in Moscow on 9 May is "disrupted", it will launch a large-scale missile strike on central Kyiv.
