Following a report by Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC), on his recent contacts in the US, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the talks have been substantive and that he now hopes it will be possible to "reinvigorate diplomacy".

Quote: "Today, Rustem Umierov delivered a report following his meetings in the United States. The negotiations were substantive. We are coordinating the schedule of the necessary visits and expect envoys of the US president in Kyiv at the turn of spring and summer. We hope this time we will be able to realise what has been planned and reinvigorate diplomacy."

Details: Zelenskyy said issues relating to prisoner-of-war exchanges and security guarantees were also discussed during the meetings.

Background:

  • Negotiations on the Russo-Ukrainian war have virtually ground to a halt since the US and Israel began their military campaign against Iran. An anticipated visit to Kyiv by Trump's negotiators "after Orthodox Easter" never took place.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at the end of April that Ukraine is ready for another round of peace talks with Russia in a trilateral format.
  • Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, has stated that trilateral negotiations involving the US, Ukraine and Russia are "inadvisable" until Kyiv withdraws Ukrainian troops from the government-controlled part of Donetsk Oblast.
