Source: European Pravda, citing a senior EU official familiar with the discussions on security guarantees, speaking on condition of anonymity
Details: EU member states will consider the possibility of using satellite monitoring to oversee compliance with a future peace agreement for Ukraine.
The source told European Pravda that the ministers will discuss how the European Union's contribution could strengthen security arrangements in the event of a peace agreement, which would come into force the day after its conclusion, and that they will also address the EU's involvement in monitoring such an agreement.
The source added that alongside the issues already raised at previous meetings, additional points will be included for discussion, including satellite monitoring.
The EU official also said that at the start of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who will travel to Brussels in person, will brief the EU ministers on the current situation in Ukraine and on the battlefield, as well as on Ukraine's most urgent needs in terms of European assistance.
The source stressed that there is a clear understanding within the EU that Russia has no intention of making sincere efforts to achieve a just and fair peace.
Background:
- As previously reported by European Pravda, on 11 May the EU also plans to impose new sanctions on Russian individuals over the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children.
- The sanctions will be announced at a high-level meeting co-chaired by the EU, Ukraine and Canada that aims to plan specific steps to bring children abducted by Russia back to Ukraine and to hold Russia accountable.
- On 28 April, the president of the Spanish Senate, Pedro Rollán, held a conference focused on bringing back Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, and called the forced deportation the most abhorrent act by Russia.
