US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has said Ukraine will receive a US$400 million assistance package, as planned, to help the country defend against Russian aggression.

Details: According to Senator Chris Coons, the US Department of Defense has not yet spent a single dollar from the package on weapons for Ukraine. When Coons demanded a spending plan, Hegseth avoided giving a direct answer.

Hegseth said the Pentagon intends to work with US European Command (EUCOM) to spend the funds appropriately and properly.

Meanwhile, Coons argued that delays in allocating the funds send the wrong signal to Vladimir Putin.

The package in question amounts to US$400 million under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which provides for the Pentagon to procure equipment from American defence companies. The funding was included in the US National Defense Authorization Act approved by Congress in December 2025.

At the end of April, Pentagon officials confirmed the allocation of the US$400 million already approved by Congress after a leading Republican senator overseeing defence spending criticised Pentagon leadership for delaying the funds.
