Russian MP says Russian economy cannot sustain continuation of war

Renat Suleymanov, a member of the Russian State Duma from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation faction, has stated that the Russia-Ukraine war must end "more swiftly" as Russia's economy "cannot sustain the prolonged continuation of the special military operation" [as the Russians refer to their unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine - ed.].

Details: Journalists asked Suleymanov how the breakdown of peace negotiations on Ukraine would affect the state of Russia's budget.
According to Suleymanov, federal budget expenditure on defence and security (40% of the total) is leading to rising inflation and cuts to social spending and investment, while military sector goods have no consumer value.
"Therefore, the fastest possible end to the special military operation is simply necessary...
At the same time, adopting a budget with reduced military spending is not the most difficult thing. But what will happen to people employed in the defence sector? To those currently under arms? A million people will return to civilian life. Where are the jobs, decent wages, and social adaptation? The problems will not diminish," Suleymanov believes.
This is likely the first such statement made by a State Duma member, Russian news outlet Agentstvo.Novosti notes.
Suleymanov's interview was published ahead of upcoming State Duma elections.
Background: According to the federal budget for 2026 adopted by Russia's State Duma, military spending will amount to RUB 12.93 trillion (US$181.7 billion), and including security and law enforcement expenditure – RUB 16.84 trillion (US$236.7 billion). This is one and a half times more than total social spending (US$151.8 billion).
