Russia restricts traffic on road along Sea of Azov as Ukraine begins using drones able to reach it

Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-appointed leader of the temporarily occupied part of Kherson Oblast, has ordered restrictions on traffic along the so-called Novorossiya road, which runs along the Sea of Azov and has been recently frequently attacked by Ukrainian drones.

Details: Saldo signed a "decree" restricting traffic on this road within the occupied part of Kherson Oblast. The restrictions were introduced from 21 May and will remain in force until "further notice".
Quote: "The restriction does not apply to military freight, special freight, medicines, equipment for restoring infrastructure, fuel, perishable goods and certain socially important basic food products."
Details: The so-called Novorossiya road, the R-280, is a Russian military logistics highway more than 500-600 km long, connecting the city of Rostov-on-Don in Russia and temporarily occupied Crimea. The route runs through captured Ukrainian cities, including Mariupol, Berdiansk and Melitopol.
Background:
- The 1st Azov Corps of Ukraine's National Guard has taken control of all Russian logistics routes near occupied Donetsk and will now destroy any targets moving along them.
- On 8 May, the 1st Azov Corps released a video showing how their drone pilots are operating reconnaissance and strike systems in Mariupol, patrolling roads up to 160 km away from the line of contact. The strikes were carried out on the so-called Novorossiya road.
- Ukraine's Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has recently said he believes the disabling of Starlink for Russian forces and the use of middle-range strike drones have been important factors that have helped slow the advance of the Russians.
