Russian leader Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is allegedly ready to reach compromises to end the war against Ukraine, as discussed during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Anchorage.

Quote: "We are absolutely ready and want to reach an agreement with Ukraine peacefully on the basis of what we discussed at the meeting with President Trump in Anchorage. At that meeting, questions were put to Russia so that we could make certain compromises. And those compromises we discussed in Anchorage – Russia agrees to them. Now it is important that the Ukrainian side also agrees to these compromises and the conflict will quickly come to its natural conclusion."

Details: Putin also stated that "control over all of Donbas and reaching an agreement do not contradict one another".

He repeated that Russian forces are advancing along the entire line of contact and that Russia allegedly controls over 85% of Donetsk Oblast, 100% of Luhansk Oblast, and 80% of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Background:

  • US President Donald Trump and Putin met on 15 August 2025 at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska.
  • Following the meeting, Trump stated that Putin continues to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts but is prepared to freeze the front line in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in March that the atmosphere of negotiations between the US and Russia following the leaders' meeting in Alaska had been constructive and collegial, but that the "spirit of Anchorage is now evaporating".
  • On 4 June, Lavrov stated that the US is acting not as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war but as a country supporting Ukraine and that "Biden's war" had turned into "Trump's war".
