On the evening of 3 June, Russian users noticed that Max, Russia's state-backed messaging app, had unexpectedly disappeared from Apple's App Store. The Cupertino-based company told the BBC that the move was linked to sanctions compliance.

Details: Apple did not specify which sanctions had prompted the removal of the messaging app, but pointed out that it acts in line with all applicable compliance regulations.

The messaging app can no longer be downloaded. It does not appear in App Store search results, and clicking on a direct link results in an error message. People who had already installed the app can continue to use it.

Background: Last summer the Russian government ordered that Max be pre-installed on all new smartphones. After that, the authorities began actively blocking or restricting alternatives such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
