Details: Sources reported explosions involving four drones, while Constanța County Prefect Adrian Picoiu said there may have been as many as five.
"At this point, four drones have exploded – one in the port, one near the port at around 11:00, and two on the Ukrainian side," the sources quoted said, without providing further details.
Picoiu told News.ro that a drone similar to the one that exploded in Constanța had been destroyed in international waters and that "there may be three more that have gone missing".
He said the drone that exploded appears to be of Ukrainian origin, but added that further checks are required.
Background:
- On 5 June, an uncrewed surface vessel exploded in the port of Constanța. Romania's Ministry of Defence noted that naval drones of this type are used in the Russia-Ukraine war.
- The Ukrainian Navy later reported that one of its uncrewed surface vessels lost control under the influence of Russian electronic warfare systems while carrying out tasks in the Black Sea operational zone and subsequently drifted towards the Romanian coast.
- Romanian President Nicușor Dan said he had been informed about the drone explosion in Constanța while travelling to Montenegro for the EU-Western Balkans summit.
