Russian forces attacked a Yahotynske for Children factory in Kyiv Oblast on 5 June, damaging an office building and some of the production facilities.

Details: Yahotynske for Children is a leader in the baby dairy product segment in Ukraine. Before the 5 June strike, the factory accounted for more than one-third of the country's supply of baby dairy products. Industry analysts suggest that this single facility supplied up to 50% of the market's demand for liquid baby dairy nutrition.

Milk Alliance, the company that owns the plant, has tried to reassure the market and parents that production of baby dairy products "is not stopping".

"The facility produced purées, cereals, milk, yoghurts and curd-based snacks. It is a unique company," Olena Zhupinas, Deputy CEO of the Association of Milk Producers, told Ekonomichna Pravda.

The scale of disruption following the Russian strike on Yahotynske for Children will depend on how long the downtime lasts and how much production the company can maintain until the factory resumes operations. "Early estimates by technical services indicate that production will be restored in July," Milk Alliance told Ekonomichna Pravda.

Zhupinas does not expect a severe shortage of supplies in the coming weeks. There are just over two weeks until July, retail chains and warehouses still have stock, and the warehouses themselves were not damaged.

However, this does not guarantee that shelves in Ukraine will remain as diverse. Products with a short shelf life are most likely to disappear from retailers first, as they cannot be stockpiled for long periods. Milk and cereals may last longer. The problem is compounded by the fact that liquid nutrition is difficult to replace with dry alternatives.

The baseline scenario for the market is a temporary narrowing of choice rather than empty shelves. Some consumers will switch to other brands, while others will wait for Yahotynske to return.
