Trump cancels "scheduled strikes" on Iran as deal is said to be close

US President Donald Trump announced on the evening of 11 June that he is cancelling planned strikes on Iran, as the "final points" of an agreement between the two sides had been approved.

Quote: "Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening."

Details: He stated that "discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved". He listed the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt as countries that participated in the approval.

Quote: "The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalised announced shortly – time and place of the signing to be announced shortly."

Background:

  • This is not the first time Trump has hinted that a deal with Iran is close and previous such statements have not materialised.
  • Earlier the same day, Trump stated that US forces would deliver a "very powerful strike" on Iran that night.
  • On 9 June, the US President stated that a peace deal with Tehran could be reached "within two to three days".
