Ukraine's Air Force has warned that there is a high probability Russia could launch a ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar test range within the next 24 hours. The site has previously been used to launch the Oreshnik missile.

Details: On the evening of 11 June, air-raid warnings were issued across Ukraine due to the threat of a ballistic missile attack. Ukrainian monitoring channels reported a potential threat involving an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM).

Background:

  • On the night of 23-24 May, Russia launched a large-scale combined attack on Ukraine, using 90 missiles and 600 drones of various types, including the Oreshnik missile, the Ukrainian Air Force reported.
  • On 4 June, Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin claimed that the Oreshnik had been used against Ukraine in order to observe how the separating blocks performed after deployment. According to Putin, the launch was intended to gather data that would help inform future decisions on the missile's full-scale deployment.
