Details: Among other things, Magyar acknowledged that he had held his first meeting with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the summit. European Pravda was the first outlet to report on the brief talks.
The Hungarian prime minister stressed that Ukraine had received considerable attention at the summit.
Quote: "The European Council conclusions devote considerable attention to Ukraine because President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was personally present at the summit yesterday. You may have seen photos of us standing together. Yes, we met. And I will not hide the fact that it was not a long conversation."
Details: Magyar said that he once again proposed holding talks with Zelenskyy in Berehove: "We made it clear to each other that we are ready to meet in the near future. I again said that I would be pleased to meet in the wonderful town of Berehove, in Zakarpattia."
However, Magyar's remarks suggest that Zelenskyy rejected the proposal. The Hungarian prime minister said that holding such a meeting is not crucial for him.
Quote: "There is no particular reason for a meeting. On the one hand, we have managed to reach a political understanding without one, and on the other hand, I would like to meet in Berehove, while he would prefer any other location."
Details: Ukrainian sources cited by European Pravda confirmed that Kyiv does not consider Berehove an acceptable venue for a first full-fledged meeting with the Hungarian leader.
Magyar also acknowledged at the press conference that no final decision had been made on whether the meeting would take place or where it would be held. Various locations other than Berehove are currently under discussion, including Kyiv, Budapest and Lviv.
Hungarian government representatives accompanying Magyar at the summit also told journalists that the Ukrainian side had proposed holding talks in Brussels, but Magyar rejected that option.
Background:
- On 18 June, Zelenskyy spoke with Magyar at the EU summit.
- Earlier, Magyar boasted that he had "crossed out" the prospect of Ukraine's rapid accession from the EU summit conclusions.
