Details: Firefighters worked throughout the night to extinguish the fire.

The building, a landmark of Kyiv architecture from the early 20th century, was constructed in 1901 to a design by architect Yosyp Zektser, commissioned by Kyiv lawyer Hryhorii Bohrov.

It was one of the architect's first commissions. Ten years after the building had been completed, the client's son, Dmytro Bohrov, fatally wounded Pyotr Stolypin, then prime minister of the Russian Empire, at the Kyiv Opera.

The building was mostly used as a hotel. It was initially the Leningrad hotel before being renamed St Petersburg. Restoration of the building was recently completed and it now operates as CityHotel Residence.

Yosyp Zektser was originally from Vinnytsia Oblast. Around 30 apartment buildings were constructed in Kyiv to his designs between 1901 and 1915. They featured well-considered layouts and technical equipment that was ahead of its time.

  • Twenty people were killed and 86 were injured in a Russian strike on the city of Kyiv on the night of 1-2 July. Those injured include a 10-year-old boy whose parents have not yet been found under the rubble.
