German foreign minister seeks explanation from his Ukrainian counterpart over changes in military leadership
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said he wants to discuss the recent leadership changes in the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the Ukrainian side.

Details: Wadephul said he will soon hold talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha "about the overall security situation, but of course also about the personnel decisions made by President Zelenskyy".
"I would like to better understand many of them," the German minister added.
According to Wadephul, Ukraine's authorities must continue implementing reforms "to further strengthen the rule of law, democracy and parliamentarianism" as the country advances on its path towards European Union membership.
"Germany is and will remain one of Ukraine's strongest supporters – politically, economically and financially. That is why we are extremely interested in having a detailed understanding of what is happening there. But I am confident these are decisions we will be able to understand. And I am confident that Ukraine's overall reform process will continue," Wadephul stressed.
Background:
- On the evening of 21 July, following six days of protests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his decision to dismiss Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and appoint Mykhailo Drapatyi to replace him.
- On 22 July, Drapatyi said that Zelenskyy had tasked him with continuing and intensifying offensive operations and further strengthening the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
- Later that day, presidential decrees confirming the appointments of the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the new chief of the General Staff were posted on the President's Office website.
