Death toll rises from Russian strike on arms exhibition near Kyiv

The number of people killed in a Russian missile strike on an arms exhibition being held at a training ground in Kyiv Oblast on 24 July has risen to 11 after a 66-year-old diplomat of the Order of Malta died in hospital.

A 66-year-old man, a Ukrainian national who was a diplomat of the Order of Malta, has died in hospital from his injuries.

This brings the death toll of the Russian attack to 11."

Details: The Order of Malta (Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta) is the oldest of the Catholic military religious orders. Active since the late 11th century, it has acquired the status of a sovereign entity in international and diplomatic relations.

The Office of the Prosecutor General also reported that the court is currently determining a pre-trial restriction for the exhibition organiser.

The prosecution is seeking his remand in custody without bail.

Background:

• Russian forces launched a missile strike on Kyiv Oblast on 24 July, hitting an arms exhibition.
• It was previously reported that 10 people were killed and around 100 injured.
• Two criminal investigations have been opened. The organiser of the exhibition, Vasyl Honcharuk, has been detained and served with a notice of suspicion under Article 367.3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (neglect of official duty resulting in deaths). He was placed under guard at a medical facility.
