US Senate advances Russia sanctions bill in procedural vote

The US Senate on 28 July approved a procedural vote to advance a sanctions bill targeting Russia and Iran, which was drafted by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

Details: The motion was supported by 86 senators.

The procedural vote opens Senate debate on the bill and consideration of written amendments. Once senators complete the debate, the chamber will hold a final vote on the legislation.

If approved by the Senate, the bill will then be sent to the House of Representatives. Should both chambers pass it, the legislation will require the signature of US President Donald Trump to become law.

The bill provides for sanctions against Russian officials and would authorise the US president to impose substantial tariffs on countries that continue to purchase Russian energy resources or help Moscow circumvent sanctions.

In addition, under the legislation, the US president would be able to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries that are major consumers of Russian oil and gas, including India, Japan and several EU member states.

Background: The US Senate began the procedural vote on sanctions against Russia and Iran on the day of the funeral of the bill's author, Senator Lindsey Graham.
