Russia cleared to compete in next season's Volleyball Nations League

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has announced that Russia will return to the Volleyball Nations League from next season.

Details: The decision applies to both the men's and women's competitions, in which Ukraine also competes.

To accommodate Russia's return, the FIVB has expanded the number of participating teams from 18 to 19. The federation is currently considering a new tournament format to account for the expanded field.

However, the 2027 FIVB Men's World Cup, which will be held in Poland, will take place without Russia. The Russian side has declined to participate in the tournament. There is still no clarity regarding Russia's participation in the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The 2027 FIVB Women's World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States and Canada.

Background: On 2 August, Poland defeated the United States to successfully defend its Volleyball Nations League title. Ukraine was eliminated in the quarter-finals by the eventual champions.
