Russia launches massive overnight missile attack on Odesa Oblast; Air Force does not disclose number of missiles

Russian forces attacked Odesa Oblast on the night of 8-9 August with ballistic, anti-ship and anti-radiation missiles, but unlike in previous reports, Ukraine's Air Force did not specify the total number of missiles launched.

Details: Russia used Iskander-M/S-400, Oniks and Kh-31P missiles launched from temporarily occupied Crimea and the Black Sea.

The main target of the Russian attack was Odesa Oblast. As of now, eight people have been reported injured.

In total, Russia launched 219 aerial assets against Ukraine, including 202 drones of various types and Banderol loitering munitions. Ukrainian air defence shot down or jammed 174 drones and five Banderol munitions.

The Air Force reported missile and attack-drone strikes at 22 locations. Several Russian missiles, however, failed to reach their targets, according to the Air Force.

Notably, this time the Air Force did not disclose the total number of missiles launched. Previous reports have typically specified how many missiles Russia uses in an attack.

Background:

• During the previous attack, on the night of 7-8 August, Russia launched six ballistic missiles. The Air Force did not report intercepting any of them.
• During the large-scale attack on 1 August, only one of 27 ballistic missiles launched was intercepted. Zelenskyy said at the time that this was due to a shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defence systems. In recent weeks, the president has repeatedly stressed Ukraine's critical need for additional Patriot interceptors.
