Zelenskyy after briefing from negotiating team: Ukraine has submitted proposals to US side

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine's negotiating team has submitted proposals to the US side on further steps in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Details: Zelenskyy said on the evening of 11 August that he had received a briefing from the negotiating team and noted that Ukraine had submitted its proposals to the US side.

"America can help strengthen our defence, first and foremost through air defence, and it can put pressure on Russia so that its plans change – from prolonging the war to preparing to end it," he added.

Background:

• The Financial Times learned that US President Donald Trump had declined Zelenskyy's request for hundreds of additional interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defence system during a meeting at the White House.
• Trump backtracked after previously signalling that he might allow Ukraine to produce Patriot systems under licence. The US president has since said that he has not yet made a final decision.
