Remains of Ukrainian leader Yevhen Konovalets brought to Kyiv – photos

The remains of Yevhen Konovalets, a colonel in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the first leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), have been brought to Ukraine.

Background:

• On 11 August it was reported that the remains of Yevhen Konovalets had been exhumed in the Netherlands.
  • After being returned to Ukraine, Konovalets' remains will be examined by a number of researchers. CT scans, MRI scans and other procedures will be carried out.
  • On 25 May, the remains of Andrii Melnyk, another OUN leader, and his wife Sofiia Fedak-Melnyk were reinterred at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
  • On 28 June, Constitution Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) on the establishment of a National Pantheon to honour distinguished Ukrainians.
  • The government has decided to establish the Ukrainian National Pantheon in the grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance will be responsible for developing the project.
