Romania issues third air-raid warning in a day due to Russian aerial assets near Ukrainian border

Spanish F-18 fighter jets were scrambled in Romania on 13 August after aerial assets near the border with Ukraine prompted the authorities to issue an air-raid warning for the third time that day.

Details: A Romanian Defence Ministry radar surveillance system detected an aerial asset near the river on the border with Ukraine at 15:17 on 13 August.

The asset entered Romanian airspace approximately 3.5 km southeast of the settlement of Chilia Veche and flew through for about 12 minutes. It then left Romanian territory in the direction of Ukraine, and the all-clear was given at 16:28.

Spanish F-18 fighter jets were scrambled to monitor the situation while the RO-Alert notification was in effect.

This occurred during a Russian attack on Odesa Oblast.

Earlier it was reported that Romania had already issued two other air-raid warnings in connection with Russian strikes on Odesa Oblast on 13 August – at around 09:00 and at 01:30.

Background:

• On 26 July, Romania deployed a fighter jet to shoot down a drone that had violated its airspace for the third time in three days.
• The first combat use of aircraft over Romania to down such a drone – which was later confirmed to be a Shahed-type loitering munition – took place on 24 July.
• This was preceded by numerous incidents in which Russian drones have entered and crashed in Romanian territory – mostly over the Danube in the border area – during Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian ports.
