Russia threatens Türkiye and US with worsening relations over arms supplies to Ukraine
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked Türkiye and the US to explain their plans to carry out large-scale weapons supplies to Ukraine.
Source: Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, as reported by Kremlin-aligned news agency TASS
Details: According to Zakharova, the circumstances and terms of large-scale supplies of American weapons to Ukraine via Türkiye remain highly contentious.
Zakharova warned that new arms supplies to Ukraine would cause serious damage to Russia's relations with both the US and Türkiye.
Attempts by the US and Türkiye to use peacemaking rhetoric while simultaneously supplying weapons to Ukraine are inevitably "undermining mutual trust", Zakharova complained.
Background:
- On 8 August, Ukraine purchased 70 M39 ATACMS ballistic missiles from Türkiye, along with 12 M270 multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) capable of firing GMLRS and ATACMS missiles, as well as tens of thousands of cluster munitions.
- It was noted that deliveries are expected to begin immediately after the legally mandated 15-day congressional review period concludes. The State Department submitted the relevant documents to lawmakers on 3 August.
- The State Department informed Congress that it is prepared to approve the transfer, as it aligns with US security assistance objectives.
