Kim Jong Un confirms deepening ties with Russia in message to Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has told Russian ruler Vladimir Putin that ties between the two countries are deepening and expressed hope for a successful future for bilateral relations.

Details: Kim Jong Un was responding to a message of congratulations from Putin marking the 81st anniversary of Japan's surrender in the Second World War and Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule.
Putin said in his message that ties between Moscow and Pyongyang had been strengthened during the joint struggle of Soviet soldiers against Japan, adding that cooperation between the two countries would continue "in all the sectors".
Kim Jong Un in his response said that the two countries' relations had "carried forward the history of common struggle for justice and precious traditions of friendship".
Background:
- In June 2024, the leaders of Russia and North Korea signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty providing for mutual military assistance in the event of an attack.
- North Korea subsequently began supplying Russia with ballistic missiles, millions of artillery shells and its own troops to support the full-scale war against Ukraine.
