Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said Germany should not hold those suspected of blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipelines criminally liable.

Quote: "Germany should certainly not prosecute those who, in a situation where their country has been attacked, take one action or another. I will not change my mind here, and I believe that those who built this pipeline should be ashamed, not those who disabled it."

Details: Tusk's comment came after a Ukrainian suspect in the 2022 Nord Stream gas pipeline sabotage case was detained in Croatia on 19 August under a European arrest warrant issued by Germany.

Asked whether he still believed the suspect should not face criminal liability, Tusk said his position had not changed.

He said Poland had long opposed the Nord Stream 2 project and had done everything possible to prevent its construction, warning that it would deepen Europe's dependence on Russian energy.

Quote: "Germany had a different opinion at the time. They changed their mind, but too late."

Background:

  • In Croatia, where Volodymyr Zhuravliov, a suspect in the Nord Stream sabotage case, was detained, he had been registered as a crew member working on a film about the sabotage.
  • Before that, German outlet LTO reported that Zhuravliov was detained in Pula during the filming of a Hollywood film about the 2022 Nord Stream sabotage. The film in question is Snake Island, featuring Hollywood stars Sean Penn and Adrien Brody.
