Finnish president: Ukraine is the best guarantee of our security against Russia
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said Ukraine is now "in a stronger and better position than ever before during this war" and is "the best guarantee of security against Russia".
Source: Stubb in an interview with German tabloid Bild
Quote: "Today, Ukraine is in a stronger and better position than ever before during this war – militarily, politically and financially.
Ukraine has the advantage, and it is winning this war."
Details: In Stubb's view, "if you survive, if you maintain your independence, if you remain a sovereign state – that is what victory is".
For the president, supporting Ukraine is also an investment in their own security.
Quote: "We, both in Germany and in Finland, have to realise that Ukraine is the best guarantee of our security against Russia. If Ukraine loses, we lose too."
Details: Stubb also expressed doubts about the possibility of a Russian nuclear strike against Ukraine, saying that this summer he "had the Chinese foreign minister visit me, and I raised this issue. And he said: 'We will never allow this to happen.' And I think that's quite an effective deterrent."
Background:
- Stubb said he does not seek to be a public participant in negotiations on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, but is ready to become a negotiator if necessary.
- He also said Ukraine needs to be prepared for the "worst" scenario regarding the situation this winter.
