Kherson Oblast head explains call for residents to evacuate

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Oblast Military Administration, has explained that he has chosen to speak openly about the situation in Kherson because of the difficult security situation.

Quote: "Recently, I have been as open as possible with you about the difficult security situation, the intensification of Russian drone attacks and strikes on our energy and heating infrastructure.

I understand that some of what I have said may have caused anxiety, anger or even misunderstanding."

Details: Prokudin said that he considers it necessary to tell adults the truth.

Quote: "Not to frighten anyone. Not to shift responsibility onto someone else. And certainly not to sow panic."

Details: Prokudin added that the situation in Kherson is particularly difficult because of the Russians' proximity. The city's critical infrastructure continues to function, but even the most advanced protection cannot guarantee that a Russian guided aerial bomb will not hit the facility it is protecting.

Quote: "That is why I am asking you to do the most important thing – do not ignore the danger. If there is a recommendation to evacuate, evacuate. Do not listen to those who try to portray such decisions as some kind of 'betrayal' or an attempt to 'drive' people out of Kherson Oblast."

Details: He added that authorities are currently considering options for accommodating residents of the region in boarding houses and other facilities in safer regions.

Background: Russian forces attacked Kherson Combined Heat and Power Plant on 27 August, causing extensive damage to the facility. Prokudin subsequently urged residents to leave the city. He said Kherson could be left without electricity and heating for a prolonged period.
