Kremlin threatens Germany with "fitting response" over closure of Russian House

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has said Germany will be given a "fitting response" after it decided to close the Russkiy Dom (Russian House) in Berlin and the Russian consulate general.

Details: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that Berlin will respond to a Russian hybrid attack involving a drone armed with explosives that was found near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month by closing the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin and adding new individuals to EU sanctions lists.

Zakharova said: "Both the Russian House and our consulate general in Bonn have long been a thorn in the side of the ruling elite. Now they have invented a pretext. Well then – they will receive a fitting response."

She claims that "under an absolutely contrived and fabricated pretext, Berlin has once again escalated bilateral relations".

"As always, not a single remotely convincing or serious piece of evidence has been presented. There simply is none, nor can there be! They invented a pretext. Meanwhile, Berlin itself is completely tainted both by fuelling the Ukrainian conflict and by involvement in terrorist attacks against civilians (…) Moscow will respond to all anti-Russian decisions," she added.

Background:

• On 4 August, a drone carrying explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The aircraft was being used to transport military cargo.
• On 1 September, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Russia bears responsibility for the incident involving the drone with explosives near the Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle airport last month.
