Ukraine officially informs ICAO that Russian airspace is dangerous for civil aviation

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said that Ukraine has officially informed the UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) that Russian airspace is dangerous for civil aviation due to increased military activity.

Quote: "We urge everyone to avoid it [Russian airspace – ed.]. Russia has been deliberately ignoring the existing threats as a result of its aggression against Ukraine, which has already led to several incidents in the past years."

Details: According to Sybiha, against the backdrop of Russia's sharp escalation of its terror campaign against Ukraine, Russian airspace is becoming increasingly dangerous.

"This is our responsible decision to notify ICAO and all airlines, and governments to take caution – even if Russia refuses to fulfil its responsibility to inform them. We want to prevent unintended incidents," Sybiha said.

Sybiha also reiterated that Ukraine is exercising its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Background: On 1 September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an address that Russian airspace was becoming completely unsafe and warned all airlines using Russian airspace about the danger.
