Russian Defence Ministry claims over 250 Ukrainian drones attacked Russia

The Russian Defence Ministry has claimed that Russian air defence intercepted and destroyed 258 Ukrainian drones on the night of 5-6 September.

Details: According to the ministry, the drones attacked areas in 14 Russian oblasts, Krasnodar Krai, occupied Crimea, as well as the waters of the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

The largest number of regions targeted were in central and southern Russia, the ministry claimed.

Background:

  • Earlier, Ryazan Oblast Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed a drone attack on the oblast and reported a fire "at one of the facilities", without specifying which facility was affected.
  • Russian outlet ASTRA used OSINT analysis of photos and videos to establish that the facility targeted was the Ryazan oil refinery. The Ukrainian outlet Exilenova+, which specialises in tracking attacks, also reported a successful strike on the refinery.
  • On the night of 5-6 September, Russia attacked Ukraine with 108 drones of various types.
