Hungary has lost court battle over frozen Russian asset profits for Ukraine, says Reuters

The European Union's General Court has dismissed Hungary's lawsuit against the EU's decision to use windfall profits from Russian assets frozen in the West to fund Ukraine's defence.

Details: The court, the second-highest judicial body in the EU, explained its decision by the lack of jurisdiction in this case.

Euronews, a European news outlet, reported that Budapest had filed a lawsuit against the European Peace Facility, a EU mechanism used to fund military assistance to Ukraine. According to Euronews, Kyiv receives €3-5 billion per year through the programme.

Hungary claimed that the European Peace Facility had violated EU law by ignoring its veto because it was not a "contributing member state".

Background: In March 2025, the EU refused to confiscate the frozen Russian assets themselves.
