Zelenskyy: Graham bill and other sanctions will help force Russia to make peace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commenting on the House of Representatives' passage of a bill that would enable the imposition of sanctions on Russia, stressed that the measures would force Russia to end its war against Ukraine.

Details: Zelenskyy pointed to the symbolism of the fact that the sanctions bill, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, was passed on the night Russia launched yet another missile attack on Ukraine.

"The Lindsey Graham bill, along with other strong sanctions steps by our partners against the source of this war – against Russia – is an extremely powerful tool that can stop this terrorist war and bring Russia to the point where it has to make peace," Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy noted that the sanctions have to be powerful enough "so that all efforts for peace – including our joint diplomatic efforts with the United States, Europe, and our other friends – can succeed".

"I thank the members of the House of Representatives, senators, and leaders of the US Congress for supporting this legislation. Russia needs to end this war," he summed up.

Background:

• On 16 September, the US House of Representatives passed the Graham-Blumenthal bill that would enable the introduction of "punitive" tariffs on countries that buy Russian energy. The bill now awaits President Donald Trump's signature.
• The outcome marked a positive development after media reports suggested that the bill was encountering growing opposition in the US House of Representatives and could be blocked at least until the November congressional elections.
• The US Senate approved the bill on 7 August by 86 votes.
