Serbian president arrives in Ukraine

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić arrived in Ukraine on a visit on 18 September.

Details: Vučić said that, at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he would take part in a meeting of the Carpathian Integration Initiative, "an important project aimed at ensuring the economic, transport and infrastructure connectivity of the countries of the wider Carpathian region".

"I am doing all this to continue ensuring stability and peace for our citizens and for Serbia," he said.

Vučić also added that Serbia had much to offer in terms of transport links, particularly with Romania and Hungary.

"We believe that in the area of transport connectivity, particularly with Romania and Hungary, as well as with Ukraine and Poland, we have much to offer – from railway lines and roads to more open borders and better cooperation in agriculture and all other areas," the Serbian president said.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan is also expected to attend the event, which is taking place in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.

According to a statement from the Romanian president's administration, the summit will feature a number of accompanying events, including the Carpathian Economic Forum, a Youth Forum, meetings of local government representatives, and meetings dedicated to cultural cooperation and environmental protection.

The initiative aims to bring together representatives of countries through which the Carpathian Mountains extend – Austria, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine – as well as other participants that play an important role in regional cooperation.

The main objectives of the high-level meeting are to coordinate efforts to realise the economic potential of the Carpathian region, increase its attractiveness to investors, protect and promote its cultural and natural heritage, and strengthen cohesion across the region.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also announced a visit to Ukraine.

He said that while in Ukraine, he plans, among other things, to meet Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to discuss sanctions against Russia.

It has also been reported that EU leaders will discuss Ukraine at a European Council summit in Brussels on 15-16 October, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participating.
