Zelenskyy describes Ukraine's defence funding shortfall as astronomical

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the shortfall in funding for Ukraine's defence as "astronomical" and said the authorities are preparing proposals to address the problem.

Details: Asked about tests of interceptor drones, Zelenskyy said two Ukrainian companies have successfully completed combat trials and that a total of 67 companies are working on the systems. Additional funding is needed to launch mass production.

"Alongside faith, optimism and all the rest, we also need money," he said. "We will deal with this issue. We are already working on it."

Zelenskyy added that he discussed the financial situation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen the day before.

Quote: "We are preparing some proposals to address the deficit I mentioned – astronomical, between you and me. Nevertheless, we will find solutions. I already know that. Agreements have already been reached on some things."

More details: Zelenskyy did not specify the current size of the funding gap. In August, he estimated the shortfall in Ukraine's 2026 defence budget at €27 billion.

Background:

• Ukraine's state finances are close to a critical situation, while delays in the necessary votes in the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) could cost Ukraine a significant portion of US$29.5 billion in international funding.
