Ukraine's foreign minister on lifting sanctions on two Russian oligarchs: Moscow is celebrating because it got what it wanted

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called the EU's decision to remove Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list "shameful and unjustifiable".

Details: Sybiha said the removal of the two Russian oligarchs from the sanctions list has been welcomed in Moscow.

Quote: "Moscow is celebrating because it got what it wanted: a sense of impunity, the humiliation of the EU and division among Europeans."

More details: However, Sybiha also proposed an alternative for EU countries – imposing national sanctions on the two oligarchs.

Quote: "But there is still a way to spoil the celebrations in Moscow. I urge all EU member states to announce now that they will impose their own national sanctions on these two individuals."

Background:

It was reported earlier that the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (Coreper) reached a preliminary agreement on 22 September to extend sanctions against Russia for 36 months while removing Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list.
Latvia announced that it would impose national sanctions on Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman after making concessions and lifting its veto on their removal from the EU sanctions list.
Slovakia had insisted that both Russian oligarchs be removed from the list, while France had sought the lifting of sanctions on Alisher Usmanov.
Earlier, European Pravda sources in French diplomatic circles explained why Paris wants sanctions on Usmanov lifted.
