Hungarian president urges support for Ukraine, which "fights for freedom just as we did in 1956"

Hungarian President András Baka has stated that Ukraine is currently fighting to preserve its independence – just as Hungarians did in 1956 during the anti-communist uprising against the pro-Soviet regime.

Details: In 1956, many countries opened their doors to Hungarians who were forced to flee the country, András Baka recalled. Now he states that Ukraine is in a similar situation.

Quote: "Today, Ukraine is fighting to preserve its independence. Hungary condemns Russia's full-scale war of aggression as a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law. We affirm Ukraine's right to self-defence, its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and the right of its people to decide their own future. The freedom Hungarians demanded for themselves in 1956 is a freedom we must uphold for Ukrainians today."

Details: According to Baka, Hungary would like to see diplomacy put an end to the war, but lasting peace requires respect for Ukraine's sovereignty.

• András Baka officially took office as president of Hungary on 19 August 2026. This followed a change of power in Hungary, when, after the April 2026 elections, Tisza party leader Péter Magyar replaced former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who had held the position for 16 years.
