Reuters: US will provide nearly US$400 million in aid to Ukraine, but no Patriot missiles

US President Donald Trump's administration has undertaken legal commitments to spend almost all of the nearly US$400 million in military aid for Ukraine approved by Congress in late 2025. However, the package will not include missiles for Patriot air defence systems.

Details: The sources said that, as of the beginning of this week, US$307 million of the US$400 million had been contracted. Trump's administration plans to commit the remaining US$93 million before the end of the financial year, which falls on 30 September.

The first deliveries of offensive weapons and equipment, including spare parts for armoured vehicles, began this month. The sources said the remainder is due to be delivered by October 2029.

Trump's term in the White House will end in January of that year.

Reuters reports that the remaining US$93 million from the package approved by Congress does not necessarily have to be spent by the end of the year. However, the funds will lapse if they have not been officially contracted by then.

One source said that the military package does not include missiles for Patriot systems, despite Russia continuing to systematically attack Ukrainian cities with drones and ballistic missiles.

The US war with Iran and the war in Ukraine have depleted global stocks of Patriot missiles, and Kyiv has repeatedly called for more of them to be supplied.

Background: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously announced that Ukraine had agreed on the delivery of a package of missiles for Patriot air defence systems.
