Ukraine's electricity consumption plunges to record low due to Russian attacks

Electricity consumption in Ukraine has fallen by 9% year-on-year to an all-time low of 5.6 TWh due to Russian attacks, destruction and the shutdown of businesses.

Details: Industrial electricity consumption fell by 23% year-on-year, while household consumption decreased by 2% year-on-year due to the growing use of residential solar power systems.

Meanwhile, the drop in domestic demand led to an increase in electricity exports. In the first 20 days of September, Ukraine exported six times more electricity than it imported, and more than during the whole of August.

Quote: "In autumn, as temperatures drop and Russian strikes on the energy sector intensify, imports are likely to grow and exceed exports."

Details: The winter energy funding gap has also narrowed from €650 million to €194 million thanks to contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, including €249 million from Germany in September.

Background: In July, Ukraine became a net exporter of electricity for the first time in 10 months, with electricity exports rising by 48% month-on-month to 232,500 MWh and imports falling by 40% to 175,000 MWh.
