Russian leader Vladimir Putin has threatened to use Russia's entire arsenal of weapons if anyone decides to attack Kaliningrad or any other Russian region.

Source: Kremlin-aligned Russian news agencies Interfax, TASS, and RIA Novosti and the Vy slushali (You listened) Telegram channel, citing remarks made by Putin at the plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club

Quote from Putin: "We are not intimidating anyone. And what you just mentioned, the Foreign Ministry's statement and the letters the Foreign Ministry sent to certain countries, is not intimidation; it's a response to an attempt to intimidate us."

Details: Putin added that "everything is written correctly in the Foreign Ministry's statement and in the letters that were sent."

Quote from Putin: "If it comes to a direct attack on the Russian Federation, in this case meaning Kaliningrad and perhaps some other territories, then of course the issue of the Russian Federation using all the weapons at our country's disposal will inevitably and immediately be on the agenda. This is inevitable."

Details: He added that supposedly "no one currently has such means of destruction as the Russian Federation".

Putin also claimed that the Russian Foreign Ministry's letter regarding the defence of Kaliningrad Oblast did not mention nuclear weapons, but rather the use of all means by Russia.

Quote from Putin: "They [Western leaders – ed.] were waiting for such an answer from us; now they will take it out of context and abuse it, inflating the narrative that Russia is allegedly threatening with nuclear weapons... We are not threatening anyone and we are not going to attack anyone in 2029, or 2030, or 2050, but if we face aggression, we will be forced to respond."

Background:

  • It was previously revealed that Russia had handed NATO a document stating the possibility of using its entire available arsenal, including nuclear weapons, in the event of an attempt by the Alliance to isolate Kaliningrad Oblast.
  • NATO responded by pointing out the defensive nature of the Alliance and calling on Russia to stop its irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.
  • Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, emphasised that Putin knows he will never be able to defeat NATO.
  • Lithuania described the new Russian threats regarding Kaliningrad as psychological pressure.
